Competitive research highlights the need to act in an integrated and complementary manner with respect to the regional, national, European and international funding channels usually used. With regard to Europe, the Horizon 2020 programme addresses complexity and a multi-disciplinary approach as the basis for innovative research, with numerous complementary initiatives that merit appropriate attention. In this context, the University intends to take a number of steps to improve its competitiveness further by:

  • establishing a central strategic, scientific and thematic control centre, to ensure the adoption of an integrated approach from regional through to international level
  • ensuring the multi-disciplinary nature of projects, with collaboration among several departments and research groups
  • introducing incentive mechanisms for individual researchers that win grants for projects and for the University structures that are most competitive in attracting funds
  • attracting international researchers who have won competitive grants, especially for ERC projects
  • supporting and promoting the contributions of young researchers, including those employed on temporary contracts.
